Learn how to file public records requests. No experience needed—just curiosity and a reason.
FOIA & Public Info Assistance
Public information belongs to the public.
Filing a public records request can feel intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. We’re here to help walk you through the process step by step. Whether you’re investigating something serious or just want to know how your city works, your right to information is protected by law.
What is a FOIA Request?
FOIA stands for Freedom of Information Act, but in Texas, it’s called the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA). It gives you the legal right to ask government entities—like school districts, city councils, and law enforcement—for access to documents, emails, and records.
You don’t need a lawyer. You don’t need a title. You just need a reason.
What We Offer
- Templates for common types of requests
- Guidance on how to submit them properly
- Review of what you get back
- Help troubleshooting if your request is ignored, delayed, or denied
- Workshops (coming soon) for people who want to learn this skill for good
We’ll also post community samples of real requests (with permission) to help demystify the process.
Why It Matters
Information is power—and too often, that power is hidden behind bureaucracy, fear, or red tape. Public records let us shine light on shady deals, demand accountability, and make better decisions as a community.
